Direct from the Arena di Verona - La Traviata - the sensation of the Italian opera season comes to Birmingham for 2 nights only.
This October, Birmingham is set to play host to one of the most ambitious operatic events of the year. Graham Vick’s triumphant production of La Traviata for the world-famous Arena di Verona will transfer from the epic splendour of the 17,000 seat Roman amphitheatre to Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena. With dazzling costumes, breath-taking sets, a 240 strong company of Birmingham’s finest local talent and and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Italian maestro Massimiliano Stefanelli, this is a ‘must see’ event for the whole of the West Midlands.
The timeless story of call girl Violetta is one of passion, money, sex and death. Having clawed her way out of the gutter can she maintain her place in the celebrity fast lane with her health wrecked by excess? When young Alfredo offers her an alternative dream of country respectability she grabs it. But the past has a nasty habit of catching up.
Rising stars – Talise Trevigne as Violetta and Mark Wilde as Alfredo – are joined by a distinguished array of singers Mark Holland, Wendy Dawn Thompson, Mark Beesley, Andrew Clarke, Rodney Clarke, Alison Crookendale and Pauls Putnin.
This breath-taking spectacle, sung in English, is directed by Birmingham Opera Company’s own Graham Vick, renowned for his major productions at La Scala,Milan; the Metropolitan Opera, New York and the Royal Opera, Covent Garden and designed by Oscar-nominated Paul Brown.
